Simplify your Kit setup so that it works for you

Oh goodness, Reader.

Ever find yourself making things way more complicated than they need to be?

For weeks, I’ve been wanting to update my welcome sequence. Finally, last week, I sat down to map it out - old school style, with pen and paper.

This will be great, I thought. I’ll boost new subscriber engagement by combining Kit’s automation features - polls, link triggers, conditional messaging - to deliver a hyper-relevant resource with personalized messaging. My new subscribers will be delighted and wowed.

But within 10 minutes, I realized this was getting way too complex. It didn’t even align with my business model or list size.

Oh well, at least it gave me an idea for this email.

Fast forward a few days, and an in writing the email, it quickly devolved in getting way too into the weeds. There I went, overcomplicating things again.

What.

The.

Heck.

Just as I was about to give up, pack up my computer, and head home, I scrapped the second email idea and decided to use the whole debacle as the content itself.

(Side note: My thought process in writing this email actually involved me saying to myself - in Chandler Bing’s voice - “Could this email be any more meta?”)

Hi, I’m Bev, and I’m learning to overcome my overcomplicating tendencies.

When I first started this business, I thought my value was in building super complex systems inside of Kit.

Until I completely blundered a project for a high-profile client. (I shared the story last week on LinkedIn.)

In trying to impress her, I overcomplicated things so much that she couldn’t even use what I created.

I still cringe when I think about the kind apology email she sent me a week after I completed the work for her, but that experience has made me a better ConvertKit consultant.

Here’s what I do differently today:

  1. It starts with understanding your needs, not what I think you should have.
  2. I’m upfront about Kit’s limitations and suggest alternative approaches when necessary.
  3. I tailor setups to your technical comfort level, so you don’t feel overwhelmed.
  4. I simplify everything. Because simpler really is better.
  5. My real value is in creating solutions you can actually use and manage.

That failure shaped how I work today. It’s not about flexing my muscles by building complex automations inside of Kit, but instead it’s about simplifying and tailoring it to make it work for you.

What have you found yourself overcomplicating in your business or life lately lately? I’d love to hear about it.

Take it one step at a time,
Bev

P.S. I’ve made simplifying email systems my specialty, and I’m booking bigger projects for December.

If you want your Kit account dialed in so you know it’s all working correctly, or if you’re thinking about switching to Kit, book a call to chat.
