“Politics should stay out of business.”
"Politics don't belong on LinkedIn."
Maybe you've heard some variation of this refrain.
Well, I call bull on that.
We're living in a time when just about everything is political.
Actually, scratch that.
We're living in a time when pretty much everything is being politicized.
As I wrote in a comment on a LinkedIn post yesterday in celebration of Trans Day of Visibility: "If speaking up for Trans folks means that I'm being 'political' in my business, then I'd rather be political than not!"
You don’t have to agree with all my views to be here.
But I do believe this: Human rights are not up for debate.
If that doesn’t sit right with you, I’m probably not the best person to hire.
It took me a while to figure out how to fully bring my values into my business, but over the years I've learned where I draw a line in the sand.
Here are three of my non-negotiables when it comes to my work doing Kit support & email marketing automation.
These principles are baked into everything I do, and I'm making a point of being very clear about them in my marketing and messaging for both my 1:1 work and digital products:
1. Consent, consent, consent
I'll only work with clients who have acquired subscribers through consent-based practices.
- Bought your list? That's a hard no.
- Scraped emails from LinkedIn? Nope.
- Collected email addresses from business cards to add to your newsletter? Hell no!
Everyone on your list should have clearly chosen to be there, with options to receive freebies without necessarily receiving marketing emails.
2. Alignment with your needs, values & audience
Love the rhythm and ritual of writing a newsletter each week? Fantastic, we'll set it up so that you can do that.
Do you work better in creative bursts and would rather have weeks of content set up at once? Amazing, I'll set up an evergreen newsletter system for you.
My approach is grounded in understanding you, not just following industry trends.
Your email system should also work for your business model. Someone selling 1:1 services has different needs from someone running a membership, and your email setup should reflect that.
Every automation is built to reflect your business ethics and respect the needs of your audience.
3. Anti-predatory practices
We're showing up as business owners, which means we're here to sell our products or services. I want you to use email marketing to sell. But I'm not for you if you:
- Rely heavily on pushy sales funnels that pummel subscribers with offers without giving them options to decline
- Depend on manufactured urgency to drive sales
- Make potential customers feel like they're failing at life if they don't buy your thing
If you’re looking for someone to help you clean up your email automation, build a system that actually works for you, and make sure your marketing reflects your values?
Whether you’re just getting started, migrating platforms, or need to fix a backend mess, that’s exactly what I do. 🙋🏻‍♀️
