Happy Tuesday, Reader!
Over the past few weeks, a few subscribers of the Automate with Heart community have asked me about growing an email list.
From the legalities & ethics of email marketing, to “how do I even start if I’m new to all this?” questions, one thing seems clear: many of us are searching for ways to build an email list that feels right.
The truth is, whether you’re just starting out with email marketing or you’ve been at it for a while, it can be tricky.
Building an email list takes effort, and often requires actively inviting people rather than waiting passively for them to find you.
(Despite what some online business coaches might have you believing...)
Here are some ways to do it while ensuring you're incorporating consent. You’ll notice the first three are more passive, and the last two are more active.
- Put it in your email signature. That way whenever you send an email that's not through your email marketing software, people see the invitation to sign up for your email list.
- Add it to your autoresponder. Whenever emails me directly (including responding to a newsletter), you receive an automated email that lets you know when you can expect to hear back from me. I also share a few links, including how to book a call and my newsletter signup page. It doesn't happen all the time, but people have signed up for both calls & my newsletter from my autoresponder.
- Put it all over your website. Footers, top of your homepage, within blog posts (depending on the length of your blog post, possibly multiple times), dedicated landing page, resources page, about page, contact page. Don't make people dig around to find it - make it obvious and easy. Fun fact: the footer of my website is one of the most popular ways people sign up for the Automate with Heart Newsletter.
- Ask to be in front of other people's email community. Reach out to your network to do a newsletter swap with someone serving an overlapping audience, or ask someone in your network to share the link to your freebie or newsletter.
- Invite individual people to join. (h/t to Katie Skelton for this one!) That doesn't mean adding people without their permission - it means literally giving them to the link to it and telling them why you think they'd enjoy it. If you’re thinking, “Wait, eww, that feels so gross,” think about it this way: Is your purpose to grow your email list simply for growth's sake, or are you providing quality content that will help them and/or who they work with?
I recognize that you might find some internal resistance to #4, and particularly to #5 - I still do.
So that's why I'm gonna challenge you on that last one to make the invite to one new person you connect with in the next week or so.
And I've got just the place to make that happen.
Be on the lookout for an email me on Thursday with more info.
Take it one step at a time,
Bev
P.S. Here's one more bonus way to grow your email list (and a heads up, that's an affiliate link coming up): Kit's - formerly known as ConvertKit - Creator Network.
